The person receiving the call always knows who is calling but still asks "Who is this?" in a mocking tone for the purpose of annoying the caller. |

ESTELLE: Let me put your father on the phone.
This portion of this (larger) exchange between George and his parents is such comedic genius that I hope it was intentional. The "who is this?" line is not delivered in the familiar mocking tone. The line is said with a serious, deadpan delivery but it has the same end result of further aggravating George. The way Frank asks who it is after Estelle says to George (who is an only child) that she's putting his father on is simply brilliant. |
